Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 27th edition of Prix Marulić - the only festival in the world dedicated to the radiophonic re-examination of heritage through ambiental listening sessions.

This year's edition will feature 31 selected programs from 17 countries. The Prix Marulić pre-selection jury had a demanding job once again: out of 70 submissions they selected the ones that are about to inspire us while listening, learning and enjoying the week on the enchanting island of Hvar for which we heartily thank the Museum of Hvar Heritage, the village of Velo Grablje, Nautical Center Hvar, Culture Public Institution HVAR 1612, the City of Hvar and all the residents that have helped us be there and enjoy the magic of all the lovely historic places for so many years. Of course, for all of you that couldn't join us this year at Hvar, we arranged the parallel radiophonic world online on this website where we'll stream all our programs.

Parallel worlds dominate this edition of Prix Marulić: we are well aware of the delightful physicality of the town and island of Hvar on one hand, and the exciting possibilities of digital world, social media and AI in the world of art, on the other.

When Austrian Joseph Faber invented Euphonia, the speaking machine that was said to speak in any European language, sing „God Save the Queen“, laugh and whisper, it was mediated to the public with a female mask covering the mechanical mouth, tongue, and jaw.

Today in 2024, humanity no longer needs the assurance of a reproduced human face to be impelled to listen to and speak with - we are all used to voices coming from house alarm systems, cars, telephones and digital assistants. And, as we humans always want more, we are embracing AI – maybe slowly, but surely – as a powerful creation tool. The world of art is expanding.

And Prix Marulić doesn't want to stay behind! Therefore we have tabled a debate on Monday May 27th in the Hvar Theatre to address the whole question of “AI and Radio Drama (Im)Possible Collaboration”.

Whether you see AI as a force of good, or a force of evil, or somewhere in between - this is a debate not to be missed.

It is all part of Prix Marulić 2024 - so I joyously invite you all to join me once again, with all our diverse and unique experiences – with our earphones on or letting Hvar's atmosphere shape our impressions – to immerse deeply into the transient and the eternal nature of sound.

Prix Marulić Festival Artistic Director
